El Barro is the mezcal bars keep asking for: honest espadín from Oaxaca, built for cocktails but good enough to drink neat. The first distillation is in copper, the second in clay, giving it more texture and a rounder texture than the thin, insipid well mezcals that wreck too many mezcal cocktails. At 46% ABV, it has the structure bartenders need, but it is priced deliberately low so accounts can pour a true artisanal clay-finished mezcal without turning every drink into a luxury cocktail.

Everardo García Salvador’s Madrecuishe is one of the bottles that explains why Cuentacuentos exists. Produced in San Pablo Mitla from wild karwinskii agave and bottled at 47.59% ABV, it carries the structure, minerality, and vegetal depth expected from great madrecuishe, but with a richer, buttery sweetness that makes it unusually generous. Everardo came from six generations of mezcaleros, and shortly before his death in 2021 he began experimenting with an 80-liter clay pot, creating hybrid distillations that gave this mezcal added texture and dimension. Only 306 liters were produced, making this not just a beautiful mezcal, but a finite record of Everardo’s final creative period.
